ABOUT
This is the 6th year of FCS Workshops hosted at Whitehall Memorial Schools. I started these workshops knowing that teachers needed opportunities to explore the benefits of upgrading their program to utilize advanced skills and experience working in commercial kitchens and building confidence in using commercial equipment effectively. After attending ProStart teacher trainings in the summer, I knew that a limited number of teachers could attend the trainings and that the cost was prohibitive for many. After being awarded scholarships to grow professionally, I felt the commitment to help others do the same and want to ensure family and consumer sciences programs continue to flourish. It is an exciting adventure as we build networks of support, friendships, and come together year after year.
About Me...
Delaine Stendahl-I am the FCS teacher at Whitehall Memorial Schools and have taught for 42 years. I have converted my residential style classroom to a commercial baking laboratory just 3 years ago. Purchasing used equipment, the room was converted to an over $100,000 lab for about $30,000 paid for through grants and donations. With two commercial kitchens (Culinary/Savory lab and Baking and Pastry lab), I serve as the hospitality pathway instructor for four districts, known as the Trempealeau Valley Cooperative Schools. Students in the four districts travel to my school for instruction at the capstone level. Capstone courses that I teach include Food Science and Nutrition (high school science credit), Culinary Arts 1 (3 College credits-Culinary Foundations and 1 College credit if students complete ServSafe certification), Restaurateur (1 College credit-Dining Room Theory and meets the district Financial Literacy graduation requirement), Baking and Pastry Science (In process for 4 College credits-Foundations of Baking). In addition to Foods Courses, I also teach Infant and Toddler Development (3 College credits), Focus on Fashion, Interior Design Studio, Introduction to Medical Terminology, Introduction to Health Careers (3 College Credits Culture of Healthcare), Adult Life Skills, and middle school courses.
I have been awarded the Home Baking Association Teacher of the year honor two times, once in 2016 and again in 2019, Wisconsin Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year, served as CTE Coordinator (LVEC), Youth Apprenticeship Director, Special Projects Director, written and implemented grants for over $578,000 in one year, and serve as an FCCLA and HOSA adviser.
